When you hand an agent a task — “analyze these PPC exports and flag every campaign where ACOS climbed two weeks in a row” — the agent runs, then it stalls. It needs a decision. It needs credentials. It needs you to choose between two plausible interpretations of “profitable.” And then it sits there, burning nothing but your patience, until you happen to glance at the terminal. Your options become: check the window every three minutes and destroy your deep work, or check it every hour and leave the agent idle, your task stalled, your day stretched.
The dock bounce is a tiny UX detail with an outsized operational consequence. It converts the terminal from a place you babysit into a place you get summoned to. That is the difference between an automation that feels like a teammate and one that feels like a pet.

The most honest comparison sits in the launch page’s own sidebar: cmux, “the open-source terminal built for coding agents.” That’s the product that gets closest in spirit. cmux is free and developer-native; Terminal Candy is $10 once, consumer-skinned, and aimed at people who’d rather not live in a grey box. The bet is that there’s a group of users — including non-programmers who supervise agents — who want the agent-cockpit experience without managing an open-source GitHub project. The differentiator is the Skin Builder: magic-wand the background off any picture, draw the terminal window onto it, pick from 84 built-in palettes like Dracula, Nord, Tokyo Night, Solarized, and CRT greens, and it loads live with no restart and no compiler. GPU-composited scanlines, phosphor glow, curvature, grain — the CRT effects are real, not a filter slapped on a screenshot.
The Skin Builder is genuinely clever. Peter’s own comment admits the preset skins are “really just proof the builder works.” But it’s also a trap. The danger is that the novelty — a Pip-Boy terminal — overshadows the utility — the agent alert. That’s exactly what happened in the launch copy: the skins lead, the alerts trail. One commenter on the launch thread told the maker to reorder the description to lead with the dock bounce, and the maker agreed: “the skins are why I built it, the alerts are why it stays open all day.”
That’s a lesson for anyone launching anything in e-commerce, not just a developer tool. You have a hook feature — the thing that earns screenshots, shares, and installs — and you have a retention feature — the thing that earns a second week of use and eventually a second order. Most launches confuse the two. The hook gets applause; the retention gets revenue. The order they appear in your launch copy predicts which one you actually believe in.
Why Amazon sellers should care more than Shopify ones
Shopify’s advantage has always been the API: the operational heavy lifting is already app-ified, and a DTC workflow lives mostly in dashboards and Shopify’s own ecosystem. Amazon is different. Amazon Seller Central is a notoriously slow interface for batch work, and serious operators still live on flat files: inventory feeds, pricing templates, order exports, settlement reports. That makes Amazon sellers structurally closer to the terminal mindset — CSV in, CSV out, scripts doing the boring work. If you’ve ever pushed a bulk price change through a spreadsheet upload, you already think like someone who needs an agent supervisor.
The alert pattern matters more on Amazon too, because more of your attention is already being drained by Seller Central’s notification noise. It drops you into a single focused surface instead of the infinite scroll of the seller app. Shopify sellers get this filtering from better-built third-party apps; Amazon sellers have to build the filtering layer themselves. Where the math breaks
Let’s talk money. Terminal Candy prices at $10 once, no subscription, with a 14-day free trial. At first glance that’s a breath of fresh air in a world of $29-per-month SaaS. But the economics are fragile for a niche utility. The launch drew 110 points and a #7 daily rank — respectable for an indie launch, far from viral. A one-time $10 price means every retained user is capped revenue, and the “publish 10 approved community skins and the $10 is on the house” loop means the most engaged users pay nothing at all. Throw in the launch-day code STOPBABYSITTING, which drops the price to $7 for the first 100 hunters, and the early revenue per user approaches a nice lunch rather than a business line.
For an indie maker, that can still be exactly the right structure. It lowers switching friction to zero and signals respect for subscription fatigue. Three transferable lessons, and none of them require you to install a terminal.

For your own launches — a new bundle, a subscription box, a brand refresh — ask which element earns the screenshot and which element earns the repeat purchase. Second, watch what happens when a product’s most engaging users cost the maker nothing. That’s a contribution loop, not just a loyalty program. The customers who get the most value are also the ones building the library that makes the product worth selling to the next customer.
Third, use one-time pricing as a trust signal, not a positioning statement. $10 once, no subscription, and a free trial long enough to make the alert mechanic a habit — this is the pricing equivalent of a handshake. It says: we know you don’t want another subscription, and we’re willing to bet that the product earns its keep in the first two weeks. The trade-off is a revenue ceiling, which means the product needs volume or a future expansion path. Watch whether Terminal Candy later adds a pro tier or a marketplace commission; if it does, you’ll know the one-time price was an entry wedge, not a philosophy.

Most UGC programs ask customers to contribute for a badge or a discount. This one uses contribution as full payment — and it sets the contribution bar high enough (ten approved skins) that only genuinely engaged users will clear it. Those are exactly the users you want as unpaid evangelists. Cross-border sellers can adapt this in smaller doses: store credit for customers who submit product photos that get approved for the listing, free shipping for a season in exchange for a verified video review, early access for buyers who contribute useful localization notes for a new market. Where my judgment says it falls short
I’m charmed by the ambition and unsold on the execution for e-commerce operators specifically.
Platform lock-in is the first problem. macOS 14+ and Apple Silicon only — no Windows, no Linux, not even older Intel Macs. That’s acceptable for a developer-tool aesthetic, but it cuts out a huge share of cross-border operators who run Windows machines in their Shenzhen offices or rely on Linux servers for the actual automation. The alert pattern is genuinely useful; the product’s reach isn’t.
The multi-agent problem is the second gap, and it’s the one that actually matters for operators. A commenter on the launch thread asked the exact right question: if three terminals are each running a different agent — one for PPC, one for listings, one for review monitoring — does a dock bounce tell you which window needs you, or does it collapse into one generic bounce? The thread doesn’t show an answer. For an operator running parallel agents, a generic bounce is just a nicer version of email noise. It solves the one-terminal case and misses the portfolio-of-automations case that any serious cross-border seller actually lives in.
The third gap is architectural. The agent alert only works if Claude Code or Codex is running inside Terminal Candy. The moment your agents run in cloud CI, on a headless server, or on a teammate’s machine across the time zones, the dock bounce is irrelevant. The feature that would turn this into a serious ops tool is a webhook: an “agent needs you” signal pushed to any endpoint — Slack, SMS, a rotation schedule. That would transform Terminal Candy from a skinnable shell into an attention layer for an entire AI-ops stack. I’d pay $10 for that. I would not pay $10 for the ability to make my terminal look like a cassette deck.
And to be honest about the aesthetics: a Game Boy terminal is delightful for about an afternoon. Serious operators stop seeing the skin by day two, and the CRT scanlines and phosphor glow stop being charming the first time you’re trying to read a long error log. The Skin Builder is the door; the alert is the room. The marketing leads with the door.
What I’d watch / test next
This week, if you’re on Apple Silicon and already supervising Claude Code or Codex, run the experiment: install Terminal Candy from the launch page, apply the launch code STOPBABYSITTING for the discounted $7, and for seven days track whether the dock bounce shortens the time your agents spend waiting on you. The skin is irrelevant; the interrupt pattern is the test. Most sellers I know underestimate how much agent time is lost to “the agent was waiting and I didn’t notice.”
If you’re not on a Mac, run the same experiment with the open-source agent terminal you already have. The point isn’t the tool — it’s the discipline of exception-only alerts. Audit your automations this week. List every recurring task you check manually: repricing, ad caps, review monitoring, inventory thresholds. Then ask which of those truly needs your judgment and which just fires events at you. Kill the event-based noise; keep the decision-based summons.
And for your next product launch, copy the structure, not the product: hook feature first in the copy, retention feature first in the pricing, and a contribution loop that lets your most engaged customers earn the product with effort rather than cash.
